Self-cloning crayfish in Canada! (#157)

Burlington, ON – Yes, you read that correctly! Marmorkrebs, or marbled crayfish have been located in a single pond in this Ontario city. This constitutes the first actual identification in the wild in North America.

No mate required! These little cuties are self-cloning!

Believed to have originated in Germany as an aquatic pet food, despite being on Ontario’s invasive species list, thay have made their way to a pond in Burlington. It is believed they have been contained to this one location.

The population can increase exponentially due to their assexual reproduction process. Once established in the wild, they can over power the existing populations with their explosive growth.

It is likely an aquarium owner acquired this breed to provide for some fish, then while cleaning the aquarium, poured the water out without realizing the small babies remained uneaten.

The land of Burlington’s City View Park has had to be posted in order to restrict the possible transfer of this breed to other locations.

Who says only Torontonians can’t have any fun in parks?

To paraphrase that famous angler’s book called The Bible…

“Give a man a crayfish and he can have a nice light snack. But give a clumsy fish enthusiast a self-cloning crayfish and you have an environmental disaster on your hands!

Thanks a lot, Jesus!
