Marion Island, Sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean – Located 2000 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, South Africa, Marion Island is a place where albatrosses, petrels, penguins, and seals come ashore to breed and moult. That’s all they know to do there.
A wee spot of an island host to a major squabble
200 years ago, mice were stowaways on sealing ships that frequented Marion Island and elected to stay ashore because it offered more food and a lot less seasickness! Mice being the randy devils they are know to be have orgied their population to a mere 1 000 000! Thats all they know to do there too.
Happy Feet: The albatross edition
The albatross is renowned for its massive wingspan (3.5 m), long flights (1000 kilometres/day), mating for life, being a bad omen for sailors (they carry the souls of dead sailors), and having a fine seabird flavour.
“After a long day sky-calling the skies of the south Indian Ocean, you just want land, kick back, and moult a bit,” Albie Tross squawked. “No one expects to get gnawed!”
Nicky “Not Mickey” Mouse offered an opposing statement, “My ancestors came here 2 centuries ago and, pardon the pun, we enjoy a bit of tail!
After a 200-year residency, this guy is one in a million and looking for love
“After a day of rooting, all we want to do is eat!” Nicky squeeked, “And we have become quite fond of having albatross. After all, there isn’t a McDonald’s to infest!”
As a result of Nicky’s Million Mouse force, the albatrosses of Marion Island are in decline.
“Oh baby! We climb up on their heads, and chew the the tastiest bits of their head and neck,” Nicky bragged.
Albie sports a party-in-the-front-business-in-the-back do
From there it turned into a pissing contest.
Albie, “We have been here forever!”
Nicky, “We were mistakenly brought here by humans! What were we to do?”
Albie, “Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1798.”
Nicky, “Mickey, MInnie, Pixie, Dixie, Mighty, Jerry, Speedy Gonzales, Roquefort, and Fievel Mousekevitz.”
Seeing that this rivalry had no end it sight, we just stopped documenting it.
